This is a copy of an original newspaper article published in
The Weekly Mississippian (Jackson, MS)
March 5, 1862; Issue 11; Column E

Notes: The article mentions that a Dr. Ratliff visited Nashville after the Battle at Ft. Donelson to attend to the wounded from Mississippi. He saw three members of the 26th. Here's the information we have on each soldier:

J. P. Collins suffered shot to the knee and had to have his leg amputated. We know Pvt. Collins didn't survive. His military records say he "Died at Nashville Tenn Mar 1 1862 from wounds at Ft Donelson." Pvt. Collins served in Company F, was a farmer by trade and was 18 years old at enlistment. He is buried in the Confederate Circle in Mt. Olivet Cemetery at Nashville. Steve visits his gravesite as often as possible. Click HERE to see a picture of his tombstone.

The S. F. Conefield is the same person as S. F. Canfield mentioned in the roster of Company E. Pvt. Canfield was a farmer from Corinth. He didn't survive either. His records say he "Died of wound Feby 20 1862." Steve hasn't been able to locate the place of his burial.

W. N. Rushing of Co. H was a farmer from Booneville. He survived the war. As a matter of fact, he lived to 80 years of age and died in 1924. He's buried at New Lebanon Freewill Cemetery in Prentiss Co., MS
